After the debacle that occured early last month in which I was duped out of a first shift position I have come to find out that we are hiring a new supervisor (my position). I was on the other side of the plant (our planthas 2 sides due to seperation of product) and was talking to some of the mechanics who mentioned that they heard that a new supervisor was offered a position and that when he came that I was going to go to 3rd shift on their side of the plant. I was a bit surprised at this as I would think that management would like me to continue on my side of the plant on a different shift so that I could learn more about the production side of the business. Now I was disturbed by this news because the rumor mill that is Mechanics talk is usually true in the end, we as supervision have to continuously shoot down their rumors and take the “see I told you so” as it comes. So being distured by this news I went to see my boss for my biweekly meeting about development and such and proceeded to ask him about the new supervisor coming in. He told me that they had extended an offer and that he had accepted and would be here in May. I then asked where he would be placed when he finished his training. My boss responded that he would be placed in my position. I immediately started wondering if the mechanics rumor mill would strike it rich again but when I asked where I would be going my boss told me that I would be moving to second shift. Second shift! I finally get the chance to have face time with production and upper management, a chance to show that I do work and can be productive in the plant. So far all the plant has to measure me by is the effectiveness of 2 programs which I have instituted and can be seen throughout the plant in Excel spreadsheets. Now I get to learn the production side of the business! The only downside of this shift change is that I will lose all contact with the outside world as I will be working when everyone else gets off work and goes to bed (2:30-11) and I will need to get a tivo! It will also be a pain in the neck for my future married life as my “wife” will come home right when I leave. Another problem is that the possibility to proceed up the ladder to 1st shift is basically impossible as the guys on 1st are there to stay (they are old and have been in the plant forever). Oh well, you take what God gives ya…..Lemonade
