Hungtastic

Can someone please explain to me how the entertainment world works? As a musician it was my dream to be in a free formed band (not school developed). I fulfilled that dream in college and even got paid to get on stage a few times. I know how hard it is to get enough talented people to form a band, match schedules for practice, have songs, and continuously improve. It takes a lot of time and patience. I have heard the glory stories of the great bands living out of vans and giving up everything to make it big, and I love those stories and appreciate what the guys/girls have put into the craft. It is when shows like American Idol come around when things get Fd up in my mind. Kids get on the show, people decide if they are good or not and within one year they get recording contracts. These contracts are based off of them singing other peoples songs, not their own! Now as if that wasn’t bad enough, the PR departments can not let their contestants go off as flops so they force feed the public follow up trash and album info until people buy what they are selling (which are the new songs that the PR probably hired writers for). The finalists also get in on the deal, just recently on the TV guide channel they had a “where are they now” seg on the AI finalists from the past. All of them have somehow or other landed in cash from spokesperson deals or other items. Not many of them are in the music biz, one of them was even picked up by TV Guide to be the dedicated AI covergirl. I enjoy watching these contestants fall off the face of TV and never get anywhere, they didn’t work for it, they were spoonfed fame. But that is not the worst of it.

The worst is the new William Hung syndrome. People are actually paying to hear this guy karaoke (he is on tour and is actually getting a 2nd album!). Hello people you can do this in your own house and not contribute to the trash!! I was walking by a local music store that was playing his CD and everyone that was around me had distorted painful looks on their face as if to say “What the hell is that!”. This kind of fame pisses me off the most as I know there are bands/solo artists out there who are trying their hardest to get a record label, but instead the companies are dropping cash on karaoke kids instead of the talent. I boycotted reality TV because it was taking over the air, this has just given me one more reason to dislike it. Hard work no longer gets you anywhere, get your 15 minutes of fame and hope yuo either are good enough to go on or bad enough for people to think you are humorous enough to sign. Hey kids forget school, go get on TV for some reality show and hope for spokesperson deals and TV interviews or maybe forget school and practice a sport all day everyday in hopes of making that infitesimal percent to make it to the pros! Why petty things like this piss me off I don’t know but it is all about the people who bitch and moan about todays generation this and that when the generation is doing exactly what they are shown works. If I could do something about it I would but for now the reality TV show boycot is all I got.

END!
