Wizard Tim
In Monty Python and the search for the Holy Grail there is a scene in which the knights are aided by Wizard Tim in tracking down the Grail. They come upon a seemingly harmless rabbit which Wizard Tim claims is evil and horrible with nasty pointy teeth. The knights do not heed the warning and attempt to attck the rabbit. A fight ensues and results in 2 knights being killed by the rabbit while other knights run in retreat.
I told you this bit to reference it to the “tragedy” in the South. Yes it is horrible that the hurricane decimated the area, but people getting angry with the government about the alerts preceding the storm and the evacuation procedures currently in place is absolutely rediculous. If these people had heeded the warnings a WHOLE WEEK IN ADAVANCE of the coming storm to leave the areas, they would not be in this predicament. Now I understand that some people “claim” that they could not leave the area but other people chose to stay based on the thought that they had survived previous storms and they would survive this one. Basically I don’t want to hear about the idiots who attempted this. They were warned, they didn’t listen, they got their just desserts. This is not very Christian of me I know, but who knows how many thousands could have been saved if those who could have left did. Stupidity runs rampant and even in the dire situations down there we see snipers firing on hospital evacuations and other firearm related incidents where people are trying to help each other out. I hope they lynch the assholes who are doing that, they deserve it. God knows I would, imagine standing there watching your rescue chopper heading your direction. After watching fellow refugees picked up in order, you know that you are next. The chopper is descending and they are readying the harness to retrieve you, and a shot fires in the general vacinity. It may not have hit the chopper but your area is now a hazzard to the men and women attempting to help you. Now wouldn’t you want to find the one who basically X’d your neighborhood off the resuce list?! The situation is pissing me off. America is trying to help, people are dying, and looters and armed vigilantes are ruining all efforts. But once again, this could have been a lot less dramatic if people had heeded the warnings. And I don’t care how many arguments I hear that they didn’t do enough to warn the populous, if I saw a big red whirly thingy heading in my direction on every news channel I would get the hell out of Dodge, but I have a college education……and a brain.

A man was standing on the roof of his house, flood water totally covering his house and lapping at his ankles. He prayed, “Lord, I trust You and know that You will save me.”
A couple in a canoe came by and asked if he needed help. “No,” said the man, “the Lord will save me.”
Later, the water now risen up to his waist, the man kept praying, “Lord, I know that You will save me from this.”
A couple of fishermen in a rowboat came by and offered to take him to safety. “No thanks,” said the man, “I know that God will save me from this.”
Not long after that the water rose to throat level. The man kept praying to God, “Lord, I know in my heart that You will save me from this.”
A National Guard helicopter came by, hovered overhead, and lowered a rope for him to hold onto. He refused saying, “I know God will save me from this flood. Thanks anyway.”
The water rose even further and he drowned. When he got to heaven he looked up at God and asked, “Lord, I prayed to You and trusted in You so much. Why didn’t You save me from that awful flood?”
“What?” the Lord asked, “I sent you a canoe, a rowboat, and the National Guard in a helicopter but you wouldn’t take any of them!”

I think a lot of you are missing the point on why most people didn’t leave. I am sure most of the people who are in trouble now COULD not leave. Look at the news and the people they are rescuing. Notice anything in common? Yes, they are all dirt poor, lower class, paycheck-to-paycheck type folks. 60% of the people in that area are at or below the poverty level. Now tell me where these poor bastards where supposed to go? Where they supposed to drive 4 hours away and live in their cars for two weeks? I’m sure as hell sure they can’t afford a hotel! And what if they don’t even have cars? Another trend I notice from the pictures of the rescues is that all the clips are of the elderly or families. Explain to me what they were supposed to do? With all the evacuations, did the government have any place set up where people could stay, free of charge? No. Did they have free transportation? No. Escort services for the elderly or disabled? No. Did they provide anything to anybody PRIOR to the first drops of rain? No. They just told everyone to leave everything behind and go somewhere else. Now, don’t get me wrong – all this craziness about looters and people trying to thwart rescue operations – I agree with you guys. I will also concede that there were people with the ability to leave and didn’t for a variety of reasons, some of which may be stupidity or arrogance or ignorance, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still suffering and we should still show them compassion. I hate the cliché but everyone makes mistakes. Just my $.02

Back up son! I am not accusing those people but the people who intentionally attempted to wait out the storm and are currently bitching about their situatuions. I am pissed at the able ones who stuck around and are now looting and firing at the attemptive rescues which are further endangering the people and worsening the environment.

common sense says, “when you’re below sea level, at least take shelter in higher ground”. Dumbass

I do share compassion with those could not leave regradless of desire. I would have to agree with Malph on the higher ground part. Regardless, that doesn’t give them the permission to loot and blunder what’s left of the town. Has anyone noticed the broght white gleen on the feet of those wishing to be rescued because “they just couldn’t get out.” I think they rolled the dice on the whole risk and reward axiom from econ (not that they realized this was what they were doing) and now wish to be carried out after the entire town has been declared a wasteland through the winter.

I’m as cynical as the next guy, but I wouldn’t wish this loss on anyone. Perhaps this is a time to remember your beliefs and faith and how luck you are that you’re not the dumbass that refused to leave, the grandfather who couldn’t, the girl that evacuated to the astodome only to get raped, or the middle aged white guy who is bankrupt. What’s our biggest worry right now? Gas-no, football. Seriously guys, let’s save a 5-spot this weekend for ‘the dumbass.’ As for my previous post on my site. I apologize for the poor taste.
