Recant! Recant!!!
I have to say that I was wrong. So wrong that I now spend parts of my day trying to figure out how to resolve the newest problem. Maybe I wasn’t wrong but just spoke too early. In reference to my earlier quote on Heroes of Might and Magic V, where I called it “good at bestâ€, I now have to say that this game is an evil addiction. Somewhere between Warcraft and Sid Meier games exists this role playing game.Â
It started off too easy and no story line and (I still have to admit) pretty lame cut scenes. But it developed into a very interactive RPG where you command armies of mythical creatures (griffins, archangels, demons, undead, etc…) against other demonic armies. You can have one “hero†or as many as you want, which thins your personal army as you have to travel and fight with every hero (although I found it useful to use one hero as a sweeper to pick up what is left behind as you battle through a level.). You conquer castles, towns, and other locations to gain the benefits of those locations. The castles are used to build upon and gain greater creatures and abilities for your armies. You spend the game gathering supplies to build your next addition to your city while also gathering experience through battle to raise your stats and items throughout the map to enhance your armies.
The game is very interactive down to the smallest detail: do you want to wear the dragon cape that gives you +3 magic or the cape that raises the morale of your army, wield the sword that deals +2 on attack or the axe that increases the defense abilities. You can also swap all this stuff between heroes. The magic isn’t too shoddy either, but the graphics that most companies pump into magic effects is not there for the oooh and aaah when the fireballs come flying down and blasting the enemy.  I am only on the 6th board and am entranced with the game, the only downfall being a so so story line and shoddy graphic cut scenes (the characters mouths don’t even move!!). But in the end, the developers probably put more time into the gameplay than the graphics which, by me, obviously paid off. I recommend, ahem, “grabbing†a copy of the game and checking it out yourself. If you are a Warcraft fan, it’s just like Warcraft only more involved so it can only be better.
Â
My apologies to Andy II for insulting the game as he seemed to take it personally :-P.
